Our alumni Junichi Matsumoto wins the 35th Akutagawa Yasushi Suntory Award for Composition

"Spatial Embroidery Society," composed by Junichi Matsumoto, a graduate of our university, has won the 35th Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Composition Award (sponsored by the Suntory Foundation for the Arts).
The award is a multifaceted prize that involves a public selection process in the form of a concert for fresh and promising works, and also commissions the winner to create a new orchestral work.
The public selection concert will be held at Suntory Hall on Saturday, August 30, 2025, and Matsumoto's composition "Spatial Embroidery Society" was selected as the winning work. A new piece will be commissioned and is scheduled to premiere at a concert hosted by the foundation two years from now.
Matsumoto was born in Hokkaido in 1973. After graduating from the Department of Composition at our university, he has won numerous awards at the Music Competition of Japan and international competitions, and has also received high praise in the field of film music. His previous awards include first place in the composition category at the 93rd Music Competition of Japan and the Excellence Award for Music at the 37th Japan Academy Prize.

We would like to congratulate Matsumoto on his award and wish him continued success.
