Master's Program

In 1968, our Graduate School of Music (Master's Program) was established.
It is established to further study and pursue the theory and practice of music. It has five majors, each of which is divided into several courses.

Purpose

This course provides an education that respects the spirit of freedom, autonomy, and self-reliance, and imparts profound knowledge and techniques from a broad perspective. It cultivates the skills of performance, creation, and research in each major field of music, as well as the outstanding abilities required for occupations that require a high level of expertise, and aims to train musicians and educators who will be able to work in a wide range of fields in Japan and around the world in the future.

Completion Certification Policy

This program awards a master's degree to those who have acquired the following qualities and abilities and are able to utilize them comprehensively. Students must complete the required courses and pass the examination of their master's thesis (final performance, final work, and research project for vocal, instrumental, and composition majors, and master's thesis for musicology and music education majors) and the final examination.

  1. Have a wide range of knowledge and scholarship not only about music but also about culture and the arts
  2. Able to give a convincing performance
  3. Ability to create works based on one's own creative ideas and theories
  4. Able to conduct specialized research on one's own performance and creation
  5. Ability to conduct specialized research in the fields of musicology and music education

Policy regarding the organization and implementation of the curriculum

This course is designed and implemented in accordance with the following guidelines in order to develop practical and theoretical skills in performance and composition, as well as research skills in musicology and music education.

  1. Acquire the basic knowledge and methods necessary for music research at the master's level.
  2. Conduct advanced education and research in your major or course.
  3. Teachers in charge of vocal music, instrumental music, and creative writing work with teachers in charge of musicology to provide guidance on research projects.
  4. Acquire teaching methods in higher education institutions

Student Admission Policy

This course accepts the following students:

  1. Those who have the knowledge and skills necessary to study this course.
  2. Those who have the desire to further improve the performance, creative, and research skills they have acquired so far through further study.
  3. Those who have the ambition to contribute to society in a wide range of fields in Japan and around the world in the future as musicians or educators, or through social activities using music.

Self-Inspection and Evaluation Policy

In order to improve the level of education and research, and to achieve the aims and social mission of the course, the course will self-examine and evaluate the status of its education and research activities.

Completion Requirements

To complete Graduate School School of Music (Master's Program), students must meet the following requirements.

  • Attended for 2 years or more
  • Obtain 30 or more credits, including required courses
  • Master's thesis examination and final examination
  • 声楽、器楽、作曲(作品創作・音楽デザインコースのみ)専攻においては、修士論文の審査を、演奏(作品提出)、および研究報告の審査に代えることができます。
  • In addition to the above, Composition Studies Major will have additional requirements for graduation that focus on performance and the creation of musical pieces.

Degree Awarding

  • Students who complete the program will be awarded a master's degree in Music.

Teaching Certificate

Those who have obtained a first-class teaching license for high school or junior high school and have acquired 24 or more credits in subjects and subject teaching methods can apply for a specialized teaching license for high school or junior high school (music) upon completion.

Curriculum Features

1. In addition to comprehensive individual lessons in each major, students can pursue professional performance and creative expression through a variety of specialized research and seminar courses in small groups related to their specialization.

2. Students Vocal Studies Major, Instrumental Studies Major, and Composition Studies Major will be offered the courses "Research Methods I," "Research Methods II," and "Research Methods III," and will begin working on writing research reports from the second semester of their first year.

3. A unique class is the "Theme-Specific Seminar," where students conduct focused research on a variety of themes that cross over the fields of their major.
This seminar will pursue research over a period of approximately two years, with new research themes to be added from time to time thereafter.
