Types of learning
Regular international students (from April 1st)
○ Undergraduate (4 years)
- Faculty of Music has an entrance examination system for international students (held in February). Students can also take the exam in November (Admission Office Entrance Examination Schedule B) and March (General Entrance Examination Schedule B). For more information, please see the entrance examination information below.
- The entrance examination guidelines will be distributed from early August.
Master's Program (2 years)
- The Graduate School of Music's Master's Program has an entrance examination system for international students (November and February). For details, please see the entrance examination information below.
- Student application guidelines will be distributed from early June.
Graduate school Doctoral Program (3 years)
- Doctoral Program does not have an entrance examination system for international students. When applying, please see the notes below regarding the application procedure.
- Student recruitment guidelines will be published on this website from late June.
Non-degree international students
○ Exchange study abroad (half term or full year)
- If you are a student at a partner university and would like to study abroad at our college, please consult with your College 's study abroad department.
*Please submit your application documents by November 30th of the year before you wish to study abroad. You will be notified of the result of your acceptance two months later, by January 31st.
*Acceptance period: April 1st to July 31st (Spring semester) / September 1st to February 28th (Fall semester) / April 1st to February 28th (All year round)
*If you are coming to Japan in April, please come to our university on a weekday (9:00 AM to 4:00 PM) between April 2nd and April 6th. If you are coming to Japan in September, please come to our college on a weekday (9:00 AM to 4:00 PM) between September 1st and September 6th.
- Credit transfer will depend on the regulations of the affiliated College. Degrees cannot be obtained.
○ international sponsored student (in principle, for one year from April to March of the following year)
- This program is for people who have been sent by foreign educational institutions. Credits for courses taken will not be recognized. Please see below for more information.
graduate international research student Graduate School research students (full year or half year)
- This is a system for those who wish to take Graduate School classes. Credits for the courses taken will not be recognized. Please see below for more details.
Government-sponsored international students
- Of the government-sponsored study abroad programs that allow students to study abroad with a scholarship from the Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), we only accept "research students" recommended by embassies overseas. Please see below for further details.
○ Diploma Course (1 year or more)
- This course is aimed at students at the level of graduating from a music College, and aims to help students pursue a high level of expertise through practical lessons taught by our college.
- To enroll in this course, you must pass a selection exam.
○ senior training (optional number of sessions)
- Anyone over the age of 18 can take private practical lessons and chamber music lessons. See below for details.
About Japanese Government Scholarships
- our college only accepts "research students" who are "embassy recommended" by Japanese diplomatic missions overseas.
- Students will initially enroll as non-regular students, and if they pass the entrance exam, they will become regular students.
- If it is determined that a student requires preparatory Japanese language education, they will be required to receive six months of preparatory Japanese language education at a preparatory educational institution designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology prior to enrolling at our college university.

About Japanese
- Classes at our college are generally conducted in Japanese, so you will need a sufficient level of Japanese language proficiency to understand the classes.
- Regular international students are required to take one of the following exams:
*For JLPT, you must take the test at the following level or above.
Undergraduate students: N2
Master's Program and Doctoral Program students: N3 for vocal, instrumental and composition, N2 for musicology and music education
- The requirements for non-degree international students vary depending on the type of study (for exchange students, this may be determined by the partner university), but all students must have "Japanese language ability sufficient to understand classes."
About life in Japan
Housing
- Shared house (shared music studio in the building)
- Rental apartment (Artsheim) (There is a basement studio that can be used for free at night, and you can practice instruments in your room)
- Rental apartments and condominiums (most properties for music students near College are soundproofed [there are restrictions on the amount of time that noise can be played])
Living expenses, part-time work

Bank account
- When opening a bank account in Japan, you will need to create a personal seal in advance. After creating the seal, go to the bank and complete the account opening procedure. Please note that many banks in Japan have counter opening hours from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- When you go to the bank to open an account, be sure to bring the following:
- Identification documents (passport, residence card, etc.)
- signature stamp
Access
Please make your own way from the airport to College and student accommodation. College staff will not be available to pick you up at the airport. As Japan's railway system is complicated, we recommend using the bus. An example is shown below.
